In the summer of 2011, I heard Mebane play the song Marianne at a tiny black box venue in southern Harlem. I approached him about recording it. The day before he was scheduled to come over, he called me and said he wanted me to record this album. I agreed, and over the next few weeks, he and Kurt and I recorded in my humid Brooklyn apartment. Many songs were done on the first take. I added a few extra notes to bring out some of the subtleties of the pieces.
